11 April 2011: Telemetry workshop in South Africa
Dr Dale Webber of VEMCO, Canada, visited South Africa to provide a telemetry workshop to researchers attending the South African Marine Science Symposium in Grahamstown on 4 April 2011. The workshop was arranged through a National Research Foundation Knowledge Fields Development Grant to Drs Malcolm Smale (Port Elizabeth Museum) and Paul Cowley (South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity). Dr Webber’s visit allowed researchers in South Africa to co-ordinate some of their research plans. The participants developed ideas of keeping a southern African tagging data base to maximize the potential for data sharing of tag information received from the various animals that have been equipped to date. The Biotelemetry Working Group will assist with coordinating ultrasonic tagging around the coast in future. Approximately thirty researchers attended and obtained a clearer understanding of the workings of the tags and obtained information on how to avoid problems that may have been encountered in previous studies elsewhere.Because the workshop was held on the first day, it allowed young researchers starting telemetry studies to interact with him and develop optimal research methodologies. He was able to interact with Dr Dicken, Sarika Singh, Alison Towner and Alison Kock, all of whom are currently doing ultrasonic telemetry work on sharks. The estuarine telemetry research team working with Dr Cowley also interacted and shared information with each other. The workshop proved to be a great success and Dr Webber also discussed other work with various colleagues in South Africa. |
