AWESOME AFRIOCEANS HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

10 December - 23 December 2011

Thanks to the generous sponsorship from the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF), AfriOceans Conservation Alliance proudly presented our AWESOME Holiday Programme this summer at Muizenberg Blue Flag Beach and within the Glencairn environment.   We are committed to making a significant difference to the lives of thousands of coastal children through our innovative and exciting 3 yr. AWESOME AfriOceans Warriors Environmental Education Programme.

Starting on Saturday 10 December 2011 until Friday 23 December 2011(excl. Sundays) our team of experienced educators took to the beach with the aim of inspiring and empower our youth to take action for our Oceans. Each day the programme started at 09h30 and finishes at 12h30 and was well supervised, structured, highly educational and lots of fun.

At Muizenberg, a Free Marine Education programme, MyBeach, supported by the City of Cape Town Blue Flag beaches, was provided that included: Who are the AfriOceans Warriors? Learn more about sharks and how to be sharkwise;  Climate change and our oceans;  10 AWEsome ways that you can save our Oceans, Stop littering! Be Wastewise and Fun activities including sandcastle competitions.

At Glencairn, AfriOceans  presented a five day hands - on interactive marine education programme, suitable for ages 7 – 12 years old that was loads of fun and loads of learning! This programme was based at our AfriOceans Public Office, Glencairn (below the Bay Café).

The programme includes: How to become  an AWESOME AfriOceans Warrior; Discovering the river, wetlands & seashore, Meet Maxine the shark and learn how to be shark wise, Explore the rocky shores and learn how everything is connected; make cool craft from waste, learn about the dangers of marine litter and how easy it is to be waste wise.  Visit the Kelp forests and paint your own kelp vuvuzela. Treasure hunts. Sand Castle competitions. It’s time to take ACTION. This programme will continue from the 3 - 7 January 2012.

Finally, on Saturday 10  December 2011 & Saturday 17 December 2011, in partnership with GEESE and local artist Donald Barnett, an exciting Community Mural Project was initiated, which involved painting a huge mural and greening of a degraded area. Come and join in and leave your mark!  A Greening plan is next. Watch the AfriOceans Warriors Tribe take their first steps together. Read our AfriOceans Warriors blog here...
